Strut Back to School in Style with These DIY Kicks
The new school year is approaching, and you know what that means—it’s time to update the kids’ wardrobes! Adding some fun and flair to their outfits doesn’t have to break the bank. Why pay a bunch of money for a cool pair of kicks when your kids can create a completely unique pair for themselves? DIY painted shoes are all the rage these days, and your kids will have a blast customizing them. Follow our instructions below, and your kids will be the coolest in school.
Supplies:
- A pair of canvas or leather shoes (preferably white)
- Acetone (leather shoes only)
- Painter’s tape
- Various paints (acrylic, fabric markers, paint pens, etc.)
- Paintbrushes
- Scotchgard (choose which type is best for your shoe material)
Instructions:
Step one (leather shoes only): Soak a rag in acetone and rub it over the shoes. The acetone will take off the factory finish and allow the paint to stick. You may see a pastelike substance come off—this is the factory finish.
Step two: Using the painter’s tape, tape off the sections of your shoe you do NOT want to paint. The tape will protect these areas from any unwanted splashes of paint.
Step three: Paint! Use acrylics, fabric markers, paint pens, or another paint of your choosing to decorate your shoes.
Step four: Once your paint is dry, you can finish it with a protective coat of Scotchgard. Spray the shoes with the guard, and you’re all set! Rock those new kicks!
