Spice up your usual campfire routine with a new treat: banana boats! Banana boats are both easy to make and easy to clean up—the two golden pillars of camping. Plus, the kids will get an important potassium boost.
True to their name, the bananas act as the “boat,” and all of your yummy ingredients get piled inside! You can use any ingredients you’d like, but be sure to include something melty and something crunchy for the best results. Below is a sample recipe for banana boats. Don’t just stick to our list of ingredients, though! Have the family get creative and add whatever your hearts desire.

- Various nuts of your choice
- Coconut flakes
- Crushed graham crackers
- Whipped cream
Instructions for Making Banana Boats
Step one: Make an incision along the length of the banana. Make sure you cut through both the peel and the flesh, but not so far that the two halves come apart. Your banana should open like a canoe.
Step two: Lay small pieces of chocolate into the banana’s grooves. Follow with additional toppings of your choice like marshmallows, nuts, or coconut flakes.
Step three: Close your banana as best as you can (it’s okay if it can’t close all the way), and wrap it tightly in a piece of foil.
Step four: Hold your banana boat over a source of heat (e.g. campfire, grill) by using tongs or skewers, or by placing it on a pan.
Step five: Keep it over the heat for about 10 minutes, or until the banana is warm and the chocolate has melted.
Step six: Unwrap and enjoy your banana boat straight out of the peel! Continue adding toppings if you’d like, such as crushed graham crackers or whipped cream.
